By Fatih Karimov - Trend: A Russian company has signed a deal with Iranian Oil Pipelines and Telecommunications Company to carry out pigging operations on Iranian oil pipelines, the Mehr News Agency quoted Iranian Oil Pipelines and Telecommunications Company's managing director Abbasali Jafari as saying on Feb. 24.
'PIG' is an acronym derived from the initial letters of the term 'Pipeline Inspection Gauge'. Pigging refers to the practice of using devices known as "pigs" to perform various maintenance operations on a pipeline. This is done without stopping the flow of the product in the pipeline.
Jafari said that Iran's oil pipeline network has an average life of 30 years. The deal is aimed at pigging operations on 6,500 kilometers length of the national pipelines network, he added.
The Russian company will receive $1200 for conducting pigging operations on one kilometer length of pipelines, he noted.
