An explosion killed 14 people and injured 20 others, including foreigners, at a cafeteria in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh on Thursday, the interior ministry said.
Evidence pointed to a "criminal act," which was being investigated by the security forces, the ministry said. Media reports spoke about a terrorist attack, DPA reported.
Officials had initially spoken of a gas explosion.
Emergency teams were sent to attend to the injured, who included cafeteria employees as well as clients of different nationalities.
The explosion occurred at a central square in the city, which is among Morocco's most popular tourist destinations. Arab media reports said most of the victims were tourists.
The apparent attack followed months of pro-democracy demonstrations in Morocco, which had first remained untouched by the unrest in other Arab countries. The demonstrations prompted King Mohammed VI to announce a sweeping constitutional reform.
