( dpa ) - President George W Bush enacted new sanctions Wednesday to punish Syria for meddling in Lebanon and undermining stabilization efforts in Iraq.

The presidential order freezes any assets or property in the United States belonging to senior Syrian officials and their associates for undermining efforts to stabilize Iraq, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

Washington has accused Syria of allowing militants responsible for attacks on US and Iraqi troops to cross into Iraq.

The order will also sanction individuals in the Syrian regime suspected of corruption or participating in crackdowns on dissidents or jailing of democracy activists.
