Russian security forces have launched an operation in Ingushetia, killing four militants in the volatile North Caucasus region, reported Press TV .

The operation came early on Sunday, as Police engaged in a skirmish with the gunmen who had earlier holed up in a private house at Ordzhonikidzevskaya town in Ingushetia's Sunzha District.

Three police officers and a local resident suffered injuries as the two sides exchanged fire.

The slain militants are believed to have been behind a spate of attacks against police officers in the North Caucasus republic.

"According to our information, the eliminated members of the militant group could have been behind a series of attempts to kill police officers," Ingushetia's prosecutor, Yury Turygin, stated.

Ingushetia, which borders disrupted Chechnya, is considered as a hotbed of bitter clashes between Russian federal troops and militants.
