Italy police swoop in against Kurdish terror suspects

An Italian police operation Friday targeted a group suspected of recruiting fighters for the militant separatist Kurdish Workers' Party PKK group.

Authorities in Venice issued 11 arrest warrants, but it was not immediately clear how many people were detained, DPA reported.

The operation was being carried out in cooperation with French and German authorities, according to the reports.

The PKK, formed in the late 1970s has been engaged in an armed struggle against Turkey that has claimed thousands of lives.

The organization is listed as a terrorist group by the European Union and the United States.
