Helicopter with 23 on board crashes in north-eastern India

Casualties were feared after a helicopter with 23 people on board crashed into a hillside and went up in flames Tuesday in the north-eastern India, officials said, DPA reported.

The flight was carrying mostly Indian tourists from Guwahati in Assam state to Tawang, a Buddhist monastery town near the Chinese border in Arunachal Pradesh state, the service operator said.

The helicopter, owned by Pawan Hans Helicopter Ltd, crashed near the helipad near Tawang town, an company official said by telephone from Guwahati.

The helicopter had 18 passengers, including two children, and a five-member crew, said the official, who did not want to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

"The weather is bad and we do not yet have details from the spot," the official said. He said Indian Air Force helicopters were trying to locate any survivors.
