The US embassy in Beirut on Saturday rejected Hezbollah's claims that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had recruited two members of the Lebanese Shiite movement, dpa reported.
"These are the same kinds of empty accusations that we have heard repeatedly from Hezbollah. There is no substance to his (Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah's) accusations," an embassy statement said.
On Friday, Nasrallah claimed that "two Hezbollah members have confessed to working for the CIA and a third is still under interrogation."
The embassy said, "It appears as if Nasrallah was addressing internal problems within Hezbollah with which we have nothing to do. Our position towards Hezbollah is well known and has not changed."
Nasrallah was responding to rumours that an Israeli spy cell was found inside the movement, and involved members who are close to him. But he said the alleged spies did not include high-ranking or religious figures and were not part of his entourage.
The United States lists Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran and Syria, as a terrorist organization.
