US President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday vowed to continue their military backing for Libya's rebels until Moamer Gaddafi had laid down arms, DPA reported.
The two leaders, who spoke at length by telephone, said the end of the Gaddafi regime was "inevitable and near", Sarkozy's office said in a statement.
They also discussed their desire to rally the international community in support of the construction of a "new, democratic and pluralist" Libya.
France's organization of an international conference on Libya's future was a "useful contribution" to that effort, the statement said.
On Monday, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe proposed that France organize a meeting of the Libya Contact Group next week.
On Tuesday, a foreign ministry spokesman said a meeting of diplomats from the Contact Group in Istanbul on Thursday would serve to prepare the Paris meeting.
