A weakened tropical storm Irene continued churning up the East Coast Sunday, shutting down Boston's transit system in advance of her arrival and leaving a trail of flooding and destruction behind it to the south, dpa reported.
At least 15 US deaths have been blamed on Irene since she made landfall in North Carolina as a Category 2 hurricane early Saturday. In the days before that, the storm caused at least 3 deaths in Dominican Republic.
The storm was moving up through Connecticut, Rhode Island and heading to Massachusetts. At least 3 million customers have already lost electricity due to the high winds and felled trees.
The Boston public transit system was closed by 8 am (1200 GMT) Sunday and would remain closed overnight to Monday, according to its website.
