BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 22. Azerbaijan and Iran have discussed the construction and enhancement of hydrometric stations on the Araz River, Trend reports, via Iran’s Ministry of Energy.
The meeting, held at the Mil-Mughan reservoir area on September 21, brought together representatives from both countries to focus on building and improving joint hydrometric and observation stations. The discussions were conducted within the framework of the ongoing sessions of the Joint Commission on the use of water and energy resources of the Araz River.
Azerbaijan and Iran have long operated facilities on the Araz River, including the Aras and Mil-Mughan reservoirs and the Araz Hydro Power Plants. In May 2024, the “Khudafarin” and “Giz Galasi” hydrojunctions were commissioned. The “Khudafarin” facility has a water capacity of 1.6 billion cubic meters, while the “Giz Galasi” facility holds 56.7 million cubic meters. Both sites will host stations with a combined capacity of 140 megawatts for each country.
