The Garabogazcarbamide plant, the largest urea plant in Central Asia, located in the city of Garabogaz in the Balkan region, produced more than 989,100 tons of urea fertilizers and 570,400 tons of liquid ammonia in 2021, Trend reports with reference to Business Turkmenistan.
The plant, owned by the state concern Turkmenhimiya in the west of Turkmenistan, exported more than 455,100 tons of urea fertilizer last year.
Urea from the plant is exported to Russia, the UK, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Kazakhstan.
The plant, which uses natural gas as its primary raw material, has an annual production capacity of 1.155 million tons of urea and 660,000 tons of synthetic ammonia.
The project for the construction of a gas chemical complex worth $1.5 billion was carried out by Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan) and Gap Inşaat (Turkey).
Opened in September 2018, the plant is outfitted with cutting-edge technology from the world's leading companies in this field, including Haldor Topsoe (Denmark), Saipem (Italy), Uhde Fertilizers Technologies (Netherlands), Siemens (Germany), and Honeywell (the US).
With the completion of this project, the country's annual production of nitrogen fertilizers surpassed two million tons. A third of this output is destined for the domestic market, while the remainder is intended for export.
