Iran is in need for low sulfur for its domestic shipping companies, said the head of Iran's Research Institute of Petroleum Industry Jafar Tofighi, Trend reports via IRNA.
"There have been ongoing negotiations with refineries of certain countries, and the pilot plan has been prepared, technical studies have been completed by our institute," he said.
"Some of the refineries have expressed interest in the plan, including possible investments, and there have been negotiations for mass production as well," he said.
Tofighi added that the plan, when operational, would allow the reduce the emission of ships to lower than 0.05 percent of sulfur.
"The plan is applicable in all the refineries in the country," said the official.
Since 2020 use of low sulfur emission in global shipping has become obligatory, yet Iranian ships and oil tankers are not yet all compliant with the requirements.
