Mexico, U.S. exchange 36 prisoners

Mexico and the United States have exchanged 36 prisoners accused of different crimes, General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic said on Sunday.

The Mexican government gave the U.S. authorities 10 U.S. citizens sentenced in Mexico, and the U.S. authorities extradited 26 Mexicans, the prosecutor's office said in a statement, Xinhua reported.

The exchange, conducted from March 9 to 13, was based on the Agreement of Penal Sentences Execution signed by the two countries in 1977.

The U.S. prisoners were convicted of crimes such as drug trafficking, homicide, use of fake currencies, and illegal possession of weapons, while the Mexican prisoners were sentenced for similar crimes, according to the statement.
