By Elena Kosolapova - Trend: US oil giant Chevron is considering the possibility of joining a project on the construction of the integrated gas chemical complex in Kazakh Atyrau region, Novosti-Kazakhstan quoted Kazakh Energy Minister Vladimir Shkolnik as saying.
"No doubt that Tengizchevroil will supply gas to the gas chemical complex [in Atyrau]. Moreover Chevron is considering the issue of entering into this project," Shkolnik said at a briefing in the Central Communication Service on Feb. 23.
Tengizchevroil was formed between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Chevron Corporation to explore and develop Tengiz oilfield.
The project for construction of the integrated gas chemical complex in Atyrau region has been developed under the Kazakhstan government's program for development of the petrochemical industry. The complex will use the available gas from Tengiz and Kashagan oil fields to produce petrochemical products with high added value for subsequent sales on the domestic and export markets. Construction of the Complex is the first step to create a petrochemical cluster in the region followed by obtaining industry high-basic products.
The capacity of the gas-chemical complex will reach 1.35 million metric tons, including 800,000 metric tons of polyethylene and 550,000 metric tons of polypropylene.
