DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, January 10. In 15 years, all residents of Tajikistan will have access to clean drinking water, Trend reports via the country's Ministry of Energy and Water Resources.

This goal is outlined in the National Water Strategy, which was approved by the government in November 2024 and sets targets for improving water supply and sanitation across the country by 2040.

At present, only 41 percent of the population in Tajikistan has access to centralized water supply, with urban areas having a higher coverage rate of 95 percent.

However, rural regions face significant challenges, with only 22 percent of the rural population having access to piped water. Water drainage systems are similarly underdeveloped, with just 64 percent coverage in cities, 10 percent in towns, and a mere 0.1 percent in villages.

The condition of the country’s water infrastructure remains a concern, with 32 percent of urban facilities deemed outdated and up to 60 percent of rural infrastructure facing similar issues.

Additionally, water loss remains high, with losses reaching up to 60 percent in major cities and 20 percent in smaller towns. The situation is aggravated by low water tariffs and insufficient investment in modernization.

The National Water Strategy aims to reduce water loss to 20 percent by 2040, in line with international standards, and to significantly improve water drainage and sanitation systems. By 2030, the government plans to have 50 percent of the population connected to centralized sewage systems, with the goal of achieving full coverage by 2040.
