Azerbaijani Opposition Parties Propose to Interrupt Presidential Elections

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 July / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / Representatives of Azerbaijani opposition and political parties proposed to interrupt the upcoming presidential elections in the meeting with the Special Envoy of OSCE Chairman-in-Office Heikki Talvitie. This was told Trend by Avaz Tamirkhan, Chairman of the Azerbaijani Liberal.  

Azerbaijani Central Election Commission said that the presidential elections were scheduled for 15 October 2008.

"OSCE Special Envoy was asked to promote to develop new democratic election code and to provide opposition's participation in the elections,' Tamirkhan said.

Tamirkhan stated that the most opposition parties which participated in the meeting criticized the attitude of a range of other opposition parties including OSCE towards the democracy in Azerbaijan. "OSCE does not want to carry out its mission. Both the Government and international organizations including OSCE are responsible for the current situation in the country.

OSCE Minsk Group was also criticized by the meeting participants. The issue regarding deportation of Azerbaijanis from Armenia was touched upon in the meeting.

Chairman of the Liberal Party said that he was not satisfied with the results of the meeting. Despite the OSCE representative had a proposal, he did not propose it to Azerbaijani opposition representatives, Tamirkhan said.   

Sardar Jalaloglu, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, refused from informing Trend about the results of the meeting. OSCE representative asked the meeting participants to restrain from giving information about the meeting. The meeting was attended by Eldar Namazov - Head of the Public Forum For the name of Azerbaijan, Arif Hajili - Head of the Executive Department of Musavat party, Ali Karimli - Chairman of Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Avaz Tamirkhan - Chairman of Liberal party, Igbal Agazade - Chairman of Umid party, Gudrat Hasanguliyev -Chairman of Popular Front Party of Unified Azerbaijan, Asim Mollazade -Chairman of Democratic Reform Party and Mubariz Gurbanli - Deputy Executive Secretary of the New Azerbaijan Party.
