The Virk Party in Samtskhe-Javakheti released a statement concerning recent developments in the region. "On Jan. 22, Georgian Interior Ministry officials made absurd charges and detained Akhaltskha Youth Center Director Grigory Minasyan and Charles Aznavour Charity Organization Chairman Sargis Hakobjanyan," the statement said. "After the arrest of the prominent Georgian Armenians, the authorities said they were suspected of planning a crime, forming an armed group and espionage." "It is not the first time such incidents have occurred in Javakhk," the staement continued. "They clearly have an anti-Armenian subtext." "The Virk Party believes that such actions can be linked to the upcoming presidential election in Georgia," the statement said. "This regards Nino Burjanadze's claims to the presidential post. We call upon and warn the Georgian authorities not to involve Javakhk Armenians in their dirty political barbarism." Virk urged the authorities to release Minasyan and Hakobjanyan immediately.
