Azerbaijan’s Ombudsman employees meet jailed journalists

Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 15 /corr. Trend K.Zarbaliyeva / The employees of Ombudsman Office of Azerbaijan visited prisons 10 and 17 of the Penal Service.

The representatives of the office met with the jailed journalists - brothers Ganimat and Sakit (Mirza Sakit) Zahidov.

Mirza Sakit did not complain on his health, saying that he does not have any problems with the management and employees of the prison, the press service of the Ombudsman Office told Trend on Jan. 15.

Sakit said that he appealed to the Narimanov District Court for the pre-term freedom, but his complaint was denied, and he will make complaint on this decision to the Court of Appeal of Baku.

Ganimat Zahid, who serves his sentence in prison 17, also did not complain on the conditions of detention and the attitude towards him. He said English is taught in the prison.

In June 2006 Sakit was sentenced to three years in prison. He was accused of illegal maintenance of drugs. The journalist considers his arrest a political order and connects this with his radical articles.

The editor in chief of Azadlyg newspaper, Ganimat Zahid, was accused of intentional damage to health and hooliganism. Last year he was sentenced to four years in prison.
