ASTANA, Kazakhstan, January 29. Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy Almassadam Satkaliyev has outlined the approach for selecting suppliers for the country’s second nuclear power plant, emphasizing a pragmatic and open process, Trend reports.

Speaking to the press, Satkaliyev noted that neither the ministry nor the government has a clear position on whether the consortium chosen for the first nuclear power plant will be involved in the second project.

“We will take a purely pragmatic approach,” he stated, adding that the selection will depend on the proposals submitted.

The minister did not rule out the possibility that vendors participating in the first consortium may also express interest in the new project.

Earlier, Deputy Energy Minister Sungat Esimkhanov announced that a preliminary decision on selecting a vendor for Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant project is expected in the first half of this year.

"We are currently in negotiations with potential vendors. By May or June, we will have initial information on which vendors we will be working with," Esimkhanov said.

On October 6, 2024, Kazakhstan held a referendum on building a nuclear power plant, with 71.12% of voters supporting the project.
