BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 6. The United Kingdom recorded its fourth consecutive year-on-year decline in gas consumption in July 2025, falling 7.1% to 2.5 billion cubic meters (bcm), according to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Trend reports.
This follows seven months of growth earlier in the year.
The residential sector led the decline with a 13% drop, reflecting the end of the heating season. Industrial consumption also fell sharply, down 30% year-on-year, as weaker demand hit energy-intensive sectors.
In contrast, gas use in the power generation sector rose 8.4%, driven by lower output from wind and nuclear, which fell 6% and 5%, respectively. Non-hydro renewables remained the dominant source in the UK’s electricity mix at 48%, followed by gas at 32% and nuclear at 20%.
For the period January-July 2025, combined gas consumption across the EU and the UK increased 3.8% year-on-year to 221 bcm, with the EU accounting for the majority of the growth at 7.7 bcm, the GECF report showed.
