All highways and vehicles will be equipped with a new system in Turkey, the country's Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Lutfi Elvan said.
The minister said that the new system will be introduced as part of the Intellectual Transport Management System, Star newspaper reported on Jan.12.
All vehicles, highways and roads in Turkey will get wireless Internet access within this project, said Elvan.
The number of vehicles in use in Turkey exceeded 17.65 million, according to the official statistics.
The minister said that all vehicles will be equipped with special 'black boxes' in the second stage of the project. This will allow to monitor the parameters of the vehicles' movement and determine their location in the case of a road accident, according to Elvan.
No information was provided about the cost and other details of the project.
Turkish Statistical Institute said that 161,306 road accidents occurred in the country in 2014, leaving 3,685 dead and 274,829 injured. Over 66 percent of the road accidents occurred in the daytime.
