Construction of the Dogancay railway tunnel between the northern provinces of Kocaeli and Sakarya in Turkey has started, Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications told Trend Dec. 19.
The new railway tunnel will be laid as part of construction of the Ankara-Istanbul high-speed railway.
As a result of the tunnel’s construction, the travel time between Ankara and Istanbul will be three hours.
The total length of the high-speed railway between Ankara and Istanbul is 533 kilometers.
Presently, the length of the high-speed railway lines in Turkey is 1,213 kilometers and construction of 4,000-kilometer railway lines continues.
Also, research is being conducted for construction of additional 5,000 kilometers of railway lines.
Turkey’s first railway was built in Izmir province in 1860. Its length was 357 kilometers.
