The combined gas-steam power plant with a capacity of 1574 megawatts has been put into operation on the territory of the Mary power plant in southern Turkmenistan, according to a source close to the organization of the opening ceremony of the facility.
The project was implemented by order of the "Turkmenenergo" State Electric Power Corporation. With the commissioning of the plant, the total capacity of the leading power plant in Turkmenistan has doubled.
But its main advantages are high environmental performance and virtually waste-free production, as well as resource savings, as not only gas but also water vapor will serve as the fuel for it, the source said.
At the same time, its efficiency will increase by half — from 34.2 to 57 percent, and harmful emissions into the atmosphere will be reduced by three times. The fuel consumption will also be reduced.
Earlier it was reported that the project is implemented by the Turkish company Calyk Enerji Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S. with the participation of American General Electric company.
The new combined cycle power plant is designed to generate 12.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. Some 4 gas turbines, 4 heat recovery boilers, 2 steam turbines will operate within the structure of the power plant.
It is expected that the project will ensure the growing energy consumption in the country and increase the export of electricity. At this stage, Turkmenistan supplies electricity to Afghanistan and Iran.
With the commissioning of the station, the reliability of electricity supply to consumers will increase. Every year, 3.1 million tons of emissions into the atmosphere will be reduced. At the same time, this will increase the volume of electricity exports to foreign countries to three billion kilowatts/hours.
