Estimates of gas reserves of Galkynysh Gas Field, located in eastern Turkmenistan, may be revised and set higher once additional information will become available, Trend reports referring to the Turkmengas State Concern.
The area of the largest onshore gas field is more than 4,000 square kilometers. There is a high probability that the field goes beyond the boundaries of the existing area in the north-west and south-east directions, the information says.
As such, according to the data obtained in the course of geological field research (including methods of two-dimensional and three-dimensional seismic surveys), the average thickness of the productive carbonate strata is about 500 meters, while the gas saturation coefficient is 84.5 percent.
At present, there are more than 40 wells in the production fund of the field, the average production rate of each of which is 2 million cubic meters of gas per day, the information says.
UK’s Gaffney, Cline & Associates had previously set higher estimates for the field’s reserves (including the Yashlar field), increasing from 26.2 trillion cubic meters of natural gas to 27.4 trillion cubic meters. The revision was provided by the "Garakel" field opened nearby, which was also included in this block.
The gas from Galkynysh field is currently supplied to the domestic market and exported to China. Moreover, this field is a resource base for supplying gas through the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline.
Due to the East-West domestic gas pipeline, the resources of Galkynysh have already been brought to the Caspian coast as well, which makes it possible to use its reserves for the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline to Europe through Azerbaijan under discussion.
