Over the past seven months, about 37,000 tons of barite (mineral) were extracted from the mines of Iran’s West Azerbaijan province, said Parisa Abedpour, deputy chairperson of the West Azerbaijan Industry, Mine and Trade Organization, Trend reports with reference to IRNA.
Abedpour noted that this mining material is used in drilling of oil and gas wells, painting and other work.
The deputy chairperson added that there are reserves of 668,000 tons of barite in the West Azerbaijan province and about 83,000 tons of barite are extracted per year.
“The extracted barite is sold in local markets,” Abedpour said.
The deputy chairperson noted that there are about 160 people working at 19 barite mines that operate with investments worth 49.6 billion rials (about $1.18 million).
“There are two barite processing facilities in the Mahabad district of the province,” the representative of the organization added. “These facilities process 80,000 tons of barite ore per year.”
