Roman Bednar headed an injury-time winner as bottom side West Bromwich Albion beat Manchester City 2-1 on Sunday, dpa reported.

The position of City manager Mark Hughes has been coming under increasing scrutiny as the club's Abu Dhabi-based owners prepare to unleash their immense spending power in the January window.

And this performance would do little to deflect the critics.

Felipe Caceido seemed to have salvaged a point for City with six minutes remaining after Luke Moore's 69th-minute opener.

A draw, though, would have been more than City deserved in a game in which they threatened only fleetingly.

Only the woodwork had spared them after 31 minutes as Bednar beat Joe Hart at his near post.

But the home side did take the lead on 69 minutes, Moore claiming his first goal for the club after latching on to James Morrison's through-ball.

West Brom had squandered leads in each of their previous two home games, and looked to have suffered the same fate as Caceido sent a backheel skimming in off the post.

But after Abdoulaye Meite had won a throw-in in a dangerous position after an uncharacteristic dribble, Gianni Zuiverloon crossed and, as Micah Richards and Hart left it for each other, Bednar headed home.

Albion are four points from safety, while City, third from bottom, have won only one of their last 10 games.
