Two municipal police officers were shot dead Tuesday while patrolling the northwestern Mexican city of Tijuana, officials said.

The officers were killed at the Paseo de los Heroes, a high- security venue because of its proximity to the public prosecutor's office, dpa reported.

On Monday, officials paid tribute to another municipal police officer who was killed on Friday while escorting the chief of the corps.

In 2008, at least 14 police officers were killed in Tijuana, the crime-ridden city in the Mexican state of Baja California that is just across the border from the US city of San Diego.

In the troubled city of 1.6 million residents, some 600 people are believed to have been killed last year, turning the one-time tourist hot spot into a near ghost town.

Yet, this is only a fraction of the drug-related killings that have soared to more than 5,000 across Mexico since January 2008, mainly in its northern states.
