A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted the Irian Jaya region, Indonesia at 2255 GMT Tuesday, the Hong Kong Observatory said in a news bulletin here Wednesday morning, Xinhua reported.
The epicenter was initially determined by the Hong Kong Observatory to be at 0.7 degree south latitude and 133.4 degrees east longitude, about 310 kilometers west of Biak, Indonesia.
No immediate casualty has been reported by press time.
