BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 8. Belgium will be represented at COP29 at a high level, Belgian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Michel Peetermans told Trend.
"Belgium is set to make a strong presence at COP29, showcasing their commitment to global climate action. The official delegation will consist of enthusiastic political leaders and a dedicated negotiating team. Significant participation from civil society, business, and journalists is also expected. Collaboration among various stakeholders plays a vital role in the Conferences of the Parties and is essential for their achievements. Fortunately, we won't have to wait too much longer to find out the names of the Belgian participants at the governmental level. This is because Belgium will be holding parliamentary elections on June 9 at both the federal and regional levels,” the Ambassador emphasized.
Both Belgium and the European Union, according to Peetersmans, place a high value on COP29.
"There is now a global consensus on climate change and the need to respond to it. Achieving the three global goals set out in the climate negotiation process will require significant efforts at all levels. These include: keeping the increase in global average temperature well below 2°C and limiting global warming (1.5°C); ensuring that our economies and societies are resilient to the impacts of climate change. As well as bringing financial flows in line with these goals in low-carbon and climate-resilient economies,” the ambassador added.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan in November this year. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks, Baku, having become the center of the world, will host about 70,000–80,000 foreign guests.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the convention. Unless the parties have decided otherwise, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
