Crimes committed in uncontrolled territories are alarming. Separatists have provided favorable conditions for organized crime in Azerbaijan's occupied lands which are left uncontrolled, Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov said at a conference of the heads of the law enforcement agencies of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Baku on April 21.

The conference of the heads of the law enforcement agencies of the Organization of the Islamic Conference will be held in Baku on April 21-22.

The conference aims to identify main directions of mutual cooperation among the OIC member states.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Sharifov said he hopes cooperation by the law enforcement agencies of the OIC member states in this regard will be effective.

Terrorism, extremism and transnational crime pose threat for people's welfare, world peace and stability, he said.

"From this viewpoint, international community must join efforts on universal and regional level," Sharifov said.

Transnational organized crime, international terrorism, extremism, aggressive separatism, trafficking of arms, narcotics, psychotropic drugs and their substitutes, human trafficking, illegal migration, legalization of funds and property obtained through crime, financing of terrorism and cooperation on combating corruption stand on the OIC conference's agenda.

The conference also aims to develop major cooperation directions in a new format within the OIC. Senior delegations of the OIC member states and representatives of international organizations will attend the conference. The conference of the heads of the law enforcement agencies of the Organization of the Islamic Conference is expected to end with Baku Declaration.
