Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 15 / Trend corr A. Huseynbala / The Azerbaijani party Vahdat [Unity] decided to partake in the municipal elections. "The decision to nominate candidates from every region was also made at the meeting of the political council of the party," Tahir Karimli, chairman of Vahdat, told Trend on Dec.15.
The municipal elections in Azerbaijan will be held in December 2009 and the parliamentary elections in November 2010. Previously, the municipal elections in Azerbaijan were held in 1999 and 2004. Karimli said that the local organizations were ordered to make a list of members of every rural municipality and submit to the central body of the party. "A special project to discuss this matter widely in the Parliament will be developed at the next meeting of the political council," Karimli said.
The chairman of the party did not exclude the participation of other parties in the municipal elections. "The position of New Azerbaijan party is important for us. Should the ruling party join in the municipal elections independently, we will act in the same fashion," Karimli said.
Vahdat party, headed by former MP Tahir Karimli, former chairman of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan, was in opposition by 2006. Presently, the party supports the political course of the government.
