The joint participation of the opposition parties of Azerbaijan in the municipal elections will depend on social and political situation in the country.

"We wish joint participation of opposition in the municipal elections. However, we will make final decision after discussions at the party," MP Igbal Agazade, chairman of Umid Party, represented in the Movement for Karabakh and Republic, told Trend on April 2.

Next municipal elections in Azerbaijan will take place in autumn 2009. The municipal elections were held twice - in 1999 and 2004.

The Council of Chairmen of Parties, represented in the Union for Democracy, made a decision in the beginning of this week to co-operate with other opposition parties during the elections.

Agazade said that the question of participation of opposition in the municipal elections in a wider composition depends also on whether there is a social order for this in the society. "If necessary, all movements, political and public organizations can join the elections in the composition of bloc," the chairman of party said.

Touching upon the entrance of other parties to the movement, the MP said that this question must be seriously discussed. "It is incorrect to consider this question already decided. Because, in the following stage it is possible to make decision via consensus. But I can not say previously whether this decision will be positive or negative," Agazade said.

The Movement for Garabag and Republic was established by the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, Citizen and Development Party, Liberal Party, Musavat, Umid, Azerbaijan Democratic Party and other public organizations.

"The proposal of the Union for Democracy to co-operate in the municipal elections was not discussed at the party," Arif Hajili, head of the central executive committee of Musavat Party, represented in the Movement for Karabakh and Republic, told Trend on April 2.

He said that the party supports co-operation of opposition in the widest composition. "However, it is difficult to say whether co-operation is possible with the union. To my knowledge, the Classic Popular Front Party made concrete proposal on joint participation in the municipal elections. But a positive answer can be given only after discussions," said Hajili.

The Union for Democracy was founded by the opposition Classic Popular Front Party, Azadlig party and National Democracy Party after the 2005 parliamentary elections. Great Azerbaijan Party joined the union in early Sept. 2008 and People's Party - in Nov. The Union is advisory and cooperation body.
