France will pursue an independent and free cooperation policy at NATO, French Defense Minister Herve Morin said in an interview with French radio RFI on the occasion of the NATO summit in Strasbourg. He advocated his country's position to return to alliance's military command.

"How it comes that France sends its troops to dangerous military operations, but refuses to participate in appointment of venue and determination of operations. How can this be justified?" he said.

Morin said that France can play an important role in the international arena. He noted that the Persian Gulf countries are re-building strategic cooperation with France.

France is involved in all NATO agencies since 1955, said the minister. "We are engaged in all operations of the alliance. We even led military operations in Afghanistan. No one can say that we are not involved in military command, because France participated in 38 out of 40 NATO military committees," he said.
