Development of democracy in Muslim Azerbaijan is important in order to prove once more that Islam and democracy can exist with each other, Tony Lloyd, a PACE (Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe) Co-Rapporteur for Azerbaijan , has said during the today's press-conference, Trend reports.
According to him, the development of democracy in Azerbaijan is important both to the Azerbaijani people and Europe itself. That will become a good example to the Middle Asian countries said Mr. Lloyd.
Touching upon an issue on Azerbaijan's ethnic minorities, PACE's other Co-Rapporteur for Azerbaijan Andreas Herkel reminded the Guba region of Azerbaijan where he had met representatives of the ethnic minorities. He is convinced that there are no problems with this issue in the country.
Mr. Lloyd considers that Azerbaijan has serious problems with its judiciary system that are connected with the lower qualification of the judges in Azerbaijan. He also added that he welcomes holding trainings for them.
The PACE both Co-Rapporteurs also expressed their concern with the aggravation of the situation with the freedom of speech, as well as pressures on some media sources in the country. The authorities should not keep those media sources quiet, said Mr. Lloyd.
