State committee accuses Russian pilgrims of bringing prohibited books into Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijan State Committee for Religious Associations accused Russian pilgrims of attempting to bring prohibited religious books into the country.

An attempt to bring prohibited religious books into Azerbaijan was prevented in the Astara region - 300 kilometers outside Baku. A report on the matter was compiled, head of the South Department of the State Committee for Religious Associations Miryahya Badirov told Trend on Jan. 13.

He said officers at the Astara checkpoint uncovered 4,000 prohibited books that the Russian pilgrims were attempting to bring into the country.

The majority of the books were seized. The materials were written in Kyrgyz and Russian.

In 2008, officers of the South Department uncovered and seized 1,300 prohibited religious books at checkpoints and shops. The South Department covers Hajiqabul, Shirvan, Salyan, Neftchala, Bilasuvar, Jalilabad, Masalli, Lankaran, Astara, Yardimli and Lerik.
