ASTANA, Kazakhstan, April 15. As part of his working trip to Kazakhstan’s Akmola region, the Vice Minister of Transport of Kazakhstan, Maksat Kaliakparov, inspected the start of the medium repair works on the Kokshetau – Zerenda road, where the first reverse lane project in the country will be implemented, Trend reports.
“The project involves expanding the roadway from the current 7 meters to 11 meters. After the completion of the works, traffic on the road will be organized into three lanes, one of which will be reversible,” said the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan in a statement.
As noted by the ministry, this traffic management scheme will significantly increase the road's capacity, reduce accidents, especially during peak traffic periods, and create comfortable conditions for tourists and residents of the region.
“The implementation of the project is especially relevant in the summer period, when there is a sharp increase in traffic heading towards the Zerenda resort area. The total length of the section undergoing repairs is about 47 kilometers. The works have already begun and are proceeding according to schedule,” said the vice minister.
The Zerenda resort area traditionally ranks among the most popular tourist destinations in the country, annually attracting thousands of vacationers from Kazakhstan and neighboring countries.
In total, in 2025, as part of the state medium repair program, it is planned to update 7,000 kilometers of national highways. This list includes sections leading to tourist attractions such as the Rakhmanov Springs, Lake Alakol, Kolsai, Bayanaul, Kendirli, the Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve, and the Imantau-Shalkar resort area.
