The Employment Service at the Azerbaijani Labor and Social Protection Ministry received roughly 43,500 job appeals in 2008, head of the service Anar Badalbayli said.
"Around 31,100 people were given jobs - an increase of 1.4 percent compared to 2007," he said.
Badalbayli said the service granted unemployed status to 4,090 people and unemployment benefits to 4, 740. The service also sent 3,390 people to refresher courses and involved 1,900 in paid community service.
The servive also held 58 job fairs in 56 regions, including the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The job fairs offered 29,410 vacancies, and provided around 9,470 people with employment; 3,440 were women, 4, 710 - youths and 394 - refugees and IDPs. The service also sent 862 people to refresher courses and involved 421 in paid community service.
Badalbayli said the service also organized fairs for high school graduates under the slogan, "First Step Towards a Career." A total of 331 companies offered 1,730 vacancies at the fairs. Roughly 433 graduates were provided with jobs.
The service provided 4,040 people with jobs in large cities and the regions; 2,030 were women and 1,890 - youths.
