BAKU, Azerbaijan, Mar. 15
By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:
Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Georgia Georgi Khanishvili met with importers of wheat, as well as manufacturers of bakery products to discuss prices on the market, Trend reports via Georgian media.
“We regularly meet with entrepreneurs and discuss in detail with them the entire current situation on the international market, where you can buy wheat. Our strategic task is to prevent an increase in existing prices for bread,” said Khanishvili.
To keep bread prices down, the Georgian government launched a subsidy program in December 2020. It is designed for four months. For mills, a fixed price is set for a 50-kilogram bag of first-grade flour at 53 lari (about $16.2).
In total, the state will spend 10 million lari (more than $3.1 million) to subsidize wheat flour.
At the meeting, the parties discussed issues related to wheat prices.
Georgia consumes 700,000-800,000 tons of wheat during the year. Only 10 percent of the grain is locally produced. The rest of the country is imported from Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and the United States. Russia accounts for 90 percent of the import of this grain.
