Georgia intends to build underground gas storage which will be used to implement projects on transportation of the Caspian gas to the European countries, Georgian Energy Minister Alexander Khetaguri said at the third Caspian oil and gas trade-transport conference in Baku on April 27. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) may participate in the project, as well.
Earlier, a tender was issued to design gas storage in Georgia which was planned to be built in the base of the field from which earlier gas and oil was produced.
"We offered the SOCAR to attend this project and it was interested in this. If SOCAR maintains its interest, it may participate in the project after finishing design work," Khetaguri said.
It is planned to build gas storage at three phases: first - storage capacity will be 450 million cubic meters, second - 1.5 billion cubic meters and third - 5 billion cubic meters.
"The second and third phase will be implemented at a regional scale. If Azerbaijan wants to store gas for its further transit to Europe, including via the South Caucasus and Nabucco gas pipeline, it can use this gas storage," Khetaguri said.
The British Confidence Energy and the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy are organizers of the conference and Trend Agency renders media support.
