The electricity generation of Iran's thermal power plants increased by 9 percent in the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021), compared to the preceding Iranian year (from March 21, 2019, through March 19, 2020), Trend reports citing Ministry of Energy of Iran.
According to the report, Iran's thermal power plants generated about 314 million megawatt-hours of electricity over the last Iranian year.
Last year, Iran's power plants (heat, water, nuclear, alternative renewable energy) generated 343 million megawatt-hours of electricity.
Thus, about 92 percent of Iran's electricity needs were provided by thermal power plants.
Iran's combined cycle power plants generated about 158 million megawatt-hours of electricity last Iranian year. Electricity generation at these power plants increased by 20 percent compared to the preceding Iranian year.
The electricity generation at Iran's thermal power plants has increased with the launch of steam units at Parand, Asaluyeh, Urmia, Ferdowsi, Shirvan, Sabalan, and Caspian power plants.
Replacing gas units with combined cycle units is considered one of the best ways to improve the efficiency of thermal power plants in Iran. So, it also plays an important role in protecting the environment and saving fuel in the electricity sector.
If one 160-megawatt steam turbine is added and one combined-cycle unit is installed to two 159-megawatt gas turbines, it is possible to increase the efficiency of the power plant from 34 percent to 50 percent without the use of additional fuel.
