Iran will drill a new delineation well in the north part of the Iran-Qatar joint South Pars gas field (called North Dome in Qatar), Director of Petroleum and Gas Engineering Department of Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) Ali Akbar Majed said, Trend reports citing the company’s website.
According to him, the well is estimated to be drilled by the end of the 6th month of the current Iranian year (September 22, 2021).
Majed added that a number of plans have been prepared to identify undeveloped parts of the South Pars gas field to maintain extraction from this field. The plans take into account the natural reduction of gas pressure as a result of extraction over the past 20 years, as well as the decline in extraction in the coming years.
The director stressed that in this regard, a well was drilled in the east part of the South Pars gas field over the past year at the initiative of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), and the results will be made public by the NIOC.
“In addition, well No. 8 on the SPD18B platform of the South Pars gas field was repaired and put into operation this year. Thus, the extraction from the SPD18B platform increased by 2 million cubic meters daily,” he said.
Majed noted that also, repair work on well No. 1 on the SPD21 platform has been launched, and is scheduled to be completed by November 21, 2021.
As reported, the South Pars gas field (called North Dome in Qatar) is a joint gas field of Iran and Qatar. The proven reserves of the South Pars Gas Field are estimated at 51 trillion cubic meters of gas, of which 36 trillion are extractable. Iran's share in the field is 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of gas condensate. Iran has so far spent $90 billion on projects of the South Pars gas field.
The phases of the South Pars gas field are located in an area of 3.7 km. Iran has extracted more than 1.8 trillion cubic meters of gas and 2.2 billion barrels of gas condensate worth $335 billion by the end of last Iranian year (March 20, 2021).
Reportedly, Iran is to spend $25-$30 billion to maintain extraction from the South Pars gas field. Iran extracts daily 700 million cubic meters of gas from this field.
