BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 7. The electricity production of Iran’s hydroelectric power plants increased by 80 percent for the first 6 months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through September 22, 2023), compared to the same period last year, Deputy Director of Iran Water and Power Resources Development Company Vahid Iyzadi said, Trend reports.
The deputy director also said that a total of 4,750 gigawatts of electricity were produced by the country's HPPs in six months.
Also, the volume of electricity produced by HPPs for six months is 3 percent more than last year's production (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), Iyzadi added.
Iyzadi attributed the rise in production to several factors, such as the doubling of output at some stations, including Gatvand and Darian HPPs, and the contribution of 90 gigawatts by Simra HPP, which had no production last year.
He also noted that the summer season was the peak time for electricity consumption in the country and that the HPPs had an 11 percent share of the country’s electricity production, thanks to the increased water reserves in the dams.
According to Iyzadi, the power generation capacity of Iran's HPPs is 12,000 megawatts and accounts for about 15 percent of the country's total power generation capacity.
At present, the power generation capacity of Iran's all power plants, including thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, etc., is approximately 91,000 megawatt-hours. Of this, 82 percent is accounted for by the country’s thermal power plants.
As reported, electricity consumption in Iran reached 72,000 megawatts per day in the summer season (June 22 through September 22), while it was around 40,000 megawatts per day in other seasons.
