BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 31. Cargo transit through Iran grew by 29 percent in volume in the first 10 months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through January 20, 2024), compared to the same period last year, said Mohammad Rezvanifar, director general of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), Trend reports.
According to Rezvanifar, a total of 14.2 million tons of cargo were transited through Iran in the specified period.
The director general added that of that, 8.7 million tons of cargo were transited through Iran's 3 customs.
“Thus, 4.2 million tons of cargo were transited via the Shahid Rajaee port customs, 3 million tons via Parvizkhan customs and 1.5 million tons through Bashmaq customs,” he said.
Despite being on several international transit routes, such as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the East-West Corridor, Iran lacks adequate infrastructure for them. This makes Iran an unreliable route for international cargo companies. Moreover, Iran faces many international sanctions. Thus, international companies avoid cargo transit through Iran.
