Some three million tons of fuel have been smuggled through Iran since the beginning of the current calendar year, which began on March 21, 2011, the deputy director of the Department for Campaign against Smuggling of Goods and Foreign Currency Mehdi Abouii said.
The figure has been significantly reduced compared to the figure for the same period two years ago, Mehdi Abouii told ISNA news agency.
Director of the Department for Campaign against Smuggling of Goods and Foreign Currency, Fatollah Zamanian, said in September 2011 that 392 goods smuggling networks have been smashed and 32,400 smugglers have been arrested over the past 6 months.
The value of the seized goods is equal to 3,976 billion rials (approximately $373m), Zamanian stated. He went on to say that the police will conduct about 14 operations in the future to counter goods smuggling.
