BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 25. Iran's crude steel production decreased by 4.8 percent during nine months of the current Iranian year (from March 20 through December 2024) compared to the same period of last year (from March 21 through December 21, 2023).

The data obtained by Trend from the country's Steel Producers Association shows that Iran's crude steel production amounted to about 23 million tons during the nine months. However, during the same period last year, the country produced about 24.2 million tons of crude steel.

Moreover, the information notes that Iran's steel product output stood at 16.4 million tons during the nine months. This is 1.4 percent less than the same period last year. During the same period last year, the country's production of steel products totaled about 16.7 million tons.

The report added that Iran produced 28.8 million tons of sponge iron during the nine months. During the mentioned period, sponge iron production increased by 2.7 percent compared to the same period last year. The country's sponge iron production stood at 28 million tons during the same period last year.

Furthermore, the information added that the country produced about 47.9 million tons of iron ore pellets during the nine months. The production of iron ore pellets decreased by 3.4 percent year on year during the nine months. During the same period last year, the country's iron ore pellet production reached about 49.6 million tons.

The report showed that for the nine months, the production of iron ore concentrate stood at about 53.7 million tons. Iron ore concentrate production rose 3.5 percent during the nine months compared to the same period last year. In the same period last year, the country produced 51.9 million tons of iron ore concentrate.

Iran produced 32.1 million tons of crude steel during the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024). Iran's crude steel production increased by 5.5 percent compared to the previous year (from March 21, 2022, through March 20, 2023). However, crude steel production in the previous year amounted to 30.4 million tons.

To note, Iran's steel production potential is about 40 million tons per year. Iran aims to increase its steel production potential to 55 million tons by 2025.
