According to Iran's long-term development program, the country's railway network should reach 11,981 kilometers by late March, Railways International Relations Department head Abbas Nazari told Trend.
Nazari said the length of railways in the country is 10,106 kilometers.
"By laying 606 kilometers of railways last year the length of the railway lines reached 10,106 kilometers," Nazari said.
Last year, according to the country's long-term development program, 1,169 kilometers of railway lines were supposed to be laid, but this figure hit only 606 kilometers, Nazarov said.
He said it is planned to lay more than 1,800 kilometers of railway lines in the current year.
Iranian media outlets reported that according to the long-term development program, railways lines should be laid to all the central provinces of Iran by 2025.
In the next 15 years, Iran has plans to lay 16,000 kilometers of railway lines.
