At a celebratory gathering Wednesday, Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi claimed he has not exercised any real power over the country since 1977, dpa reported.
"I carried out the revolution to free Libya in 1969, handed authority over to the people, and then rested in my tent," Gaddafi said.
"We handed over authority to the Libyan people in 1977, and since then we have exercised no power in the country," he said.
Gaddafi was speaking at a televised celebratory gathering to mark the 34th anniversary of the declaration of the People's Authority, when he symbolically handed power over to the Libyan people.
"We will place both fingers in the eyes of anyone who doubts the authority of the Libyan people," Gaddafi said.
