Israel again to offer humanitarian lull in Gaza fighting

The Israeli military said it would cease hostilities for three hours on Thursday afternoon to allow Palestinians to stock up on basic necessities, for the second consecutive day.

The lull is expected to go into effect at 1 pm (1100 GMT).

The military said the lull would also enable humanitarian agencies to carry out their duties, as their movement has been hampered by the fighting, reported dpa.

Earlier, the Red Cross said that during the previous lull it recovered over a dozen corpses and about 16 seriously wounded people who ambulances could not access during the previous four days.

Residents in Gaza used Wednesday's lull to buy food, but residents reported that bread lines remain long and fresh food was running out. People were mostly eating canned goods, witnesses said.

A military spokesman said some 300 holders of foreign passports in the Gaza Strip would be allowed out during the lull.

During the day, the military would allow into the enclave some 100 trucks of humanitarian aid provided by international organizations and 500,000 litres of heavy duty diesel for the Gaza power station.

The UN had said that over 1 million people in Gaza were without power for several days, affecting also the water delivery to about two-thirds of the population. dpa sg mga
