ICRC demands Israel's protection of Palestinians from settlers' assaults

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) demanded Israel on Wednesday to protect Palestinians from the assaults of Jewish settlers in the West Bank, Xinhua reported.

Peatrice Megevand-Rogo, ICRC Director of Operations in the Middle East and North Africa said in a press statement sent to Xinhua "We repeat our calls for Israel to do more to protect the Palestinians, their lands and their crops in the West Bank from the violence of the settlers."

The statement also said that the annoying violent actions frequently committed by Israeli settlers against the Palestinian residents "prohibit farmers from farming their lands and even prevent them from reaching it."

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA), which rules the West Bank, calls for the complete cessation of settlement activities in the territory. It refuses to renew the stalled peace talks until Israel stops settlement activity.

The United States has been trying to bridge the gaps between the two sides to resume their talks which had been stalled since December 2008.

The ICRC statement condemned the Israeli security measures imposed on Palestinian residents' movement in the West Bank, due to the Israeli security checkpoints all over the West Bank.

The statement also considered the Israeli separation barrier that Israel has been constructing in the West Bank, which confiscates Palestinian properties, "violates the international and human rights laws."

Megevand-Rogo also condemned the Israeli construction plans and depriving the Palestinians from getting the needed licenses for building new houses or even renovating their old houses.
