( dpa ) - Mexican President Felipe Calderon met with Queen Margrethe II of Denmark on Monday at the beginning of her five-day visit to the Latin American country.
Calderon stressed that his government wants "to build closer ties in the field of renewable energy," in which the European country has made considerable progress.
The queen was in Mexico with Prince Consort Henrik and was scheduled to follow an agenda focused on trade and culture.
Calderon noted that trade between the two countries grew significantly from 2005-2007. Mexico went from selling Denmark goods and services for 8 million dollars in 2005 to 130 million dollars two years later. Denmark, in turn, went from sending 71 million dollars to 320 million dollars.
Queen Margrethe was set to launch the new facilities of two Danish companies in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi - a pilot ultra-pasteurization plant by Palsgaard Mexico and a water-pump plant by Grundfos.
The Danish monarch was also set to attend the International Contemporary Film Festival in Mexico City to support the screening of films from the European country.
